February Construction Update

Feb 1, 2021

Every morning, a highly trained construction crew member climbs the blue, 305-foot-tall crane that has become an established feature of downtown Lincoln. Throughout the Lied Place Residences build, he expertly maneuvers this specialized machinery to lift heavy items and deposit them at their destinations. If necessary, the crane can reach 196 feet away from its base to hoist 22,000 pounds of construction materials. After his work for the day, he climbs down, a descent that takes him roughly 10 minutes.

The Lied Place structure gained ten feet in elevation the past four weeks, standing at 187 feet and steadily climbing toward its completed height. Concrete for Level 18 was poured on January 13th, with Level 19 scheduled early this month. Because of the structure’s height, no concrete pump trucks in the area can reach the top. To adapt to the requirements of the build, the construction crew is using a strategically placed “standpipe” to complete the final pours. This concrete technology allows crews to pump mixed concrete to a desired level, a method developed to satisfy recent increased demand for high-rise buildings worldwide. With fewer concrete pours on the horizon, the crew is also focusing on enclosing the floors below, with window framing on Level 12 and interior framing on Level 14. Looking ahead to interior build-out, drywall is being installed on Level 9 and painting is beginning on Level 8.

With little to no room for material storage or equipment placement, the most challenging component of this project is thorough logistics planning. The crew at Lied Place Residences is in constant communication with vendors and suppliers to effectively coordinate the timing and placement of materials for the building’s progress.
